Zaiko à Gand

Ceux qui n'ont pas assisté à "La Soiree Africaine" à Gand, Samedi passé, ont vraiment manqué un bonne occasion. Qu'ont-ils raté? Zaiko bien sûr, un Zaiko en grande forme. Tel était l'impact que l'audience, qui n'avait probablement jamais vu un groupe Congolais auparavant, était en transe dès le premier sébène qui accompagnait la chorégraphie des chanteurs. Nous ne sommes pas habitués à ceci, me soufflait une jeune fille, avant d'ajouter qu'elle n'avait jamais vu un tel spectacle avant. Apart plus ou moins 30 Africains le reste de la salle n'était rempli que des jeunes Belges. On notait aussi plusieurs couples, un peu âgés, qui appréciaient clairement le spectacle.

Bien sur qu'une réaction ausi enthousiastique aurait un effet sur les musiciens. Les chanteurs et animateurs ont chanté et dansé comme on les avait jamais vu auparavant. Jossart était aussi en pleine forme. En majorité, Zaiko a jouée des vieux succès tels que Sandralina, Muvaro, Fièvre Mondo. Il y avait même les chansons Nyongo Ekeseni et Manzaka Ebende que je n'avais jamais entendu jouer en live dépuis 1985. Un autre bonus était une sono impéccable. On pouvait clairement entendre chaque instrument. En l'absence de Petit Poisson, toujours hospitalisé, JP Kalosha les accompagnait à la guitare solo. J'étais agréablement surpris de voir Jimmy Yaba jouer le solo d'une chanson. Je crois qu'il devrait le faire un peu plus souvent. La seule chose qui a manqué n'était que les ballades aigue de la guitare de solo, ce son érrant dont Zaiko seul connait le secret, mais ce n'était qu'une petite note noire dans un spectacle merveilleux.

Ce que j'adore chez Zaiko c'est leur spectacle non-stop. A la fin du concert, pendant les bis, beaucoup de filles Belges sont montées sur scène, à la demande des musiciens. Pendant celles-ci dansaient sur le podium, d'autres attendaient, avec impatience, leur tour au bas de la scène.

Zaiko in Gent

Those who did not attend "La Soirée Africaine" in Gent last Saturday really missed out on something. What did they miss? Well Zaiko of course, a Zaiko in exceptional form, such was the impact that the audience, of whom most had probably never seen a Congolese band before, was on their feet after the band played the first sebene and the singers got into their dance routine. We are not used to this, a young girl told me, before adding that she had never seen anything like it before. Apart from 30 or so African people most of the audience were young Belgians but I also saw several elderly couples who clearly enjoyed the show.

Of course such an over enthousiastic reaction had an effect on the band as well. The singers and animateurs sang and danced as they had never done before, Jossart also was in teriffic form. Most of the songs Zaiko played were older ones like Sandralina, Muvaro, Fievre Mondo, but also songs I had never heard play live before like Nyongo Ekeseni and Manzaka Ebende. Another bonus was that the sound was good, evey instrument was clearly audible. The soloist that night was JP Kilosha, Petit Poisson was unable to come because he was in hospital I was told. Another I had never seen before was Jimmy Yaba playing solo during one song, something he should do more often. The only thing I missed that night was the distortion of the solo guitar, the fuzzy sound, but that was the only minor point of a wonderful evening.

*The best thing about a Zaiko concert is that it a constant flow of music without much interuptions and very melodious sebenes. At the end of the concert during the encore many Belgian girls were asked by the bandmembers to come on stage and dance with them and all were more than happy to oblige, some girls came even running down to the stage and were eagerly waiting to be asked.*
